HealthCare Volunteer, the Non-Profit for Global Health Care

In 2005, a second year medical student and dental student sought out volunteering opportunities during their winter vacation. They had a trip planned to the Amazon in Brazil, and wanted to provide some basic health services to the needy people while they were there. Like any other Internet-savy person, they scoured the Internet and wrote dozens of emails to various volunteer organizations, but didn't heard back from a single organization.

The medical student was frustrated and decided not to go on the trip to Brazil. The dental student went on the trip as planned, but for a vacation. As he trekked through the jungles and sailed down the rivers of the Amazon during his vacation, he came across a large number of people who could have used his dental services, even with the little knowledge he had at that time. The saddest part was that there were lots of people who wanted to volunteer, but just didn’t have the platform. Meanwhile, millions of people were going without basic healthcare around the world. When he returned home, he wondered if other health professionals and people had had similar experiences. In the meanwhile, the medical student has found out through people he spoke to that physicians and medical students had similar roadblocks to volunteering. HealthCare Volunteer was born as a solution to this problem.

HealthCare Volunteer's Vision:

• Our mission is to empower any individual to make an impact in community and global health. We connect volunteers to health-related volunteering opportunities for free—anywhere, any time, and for any length of time. We aim to become the de-facto non-profit organization and website for health-related volunteers and workers anywhere in the world.
• We are building the world's largest listing of healthcare volunteering and employment opportunities. We empower every human being to contribute to the health of the world.
• We employ innovative technology solutions to improve the healthcare system. Unlike many of the services on the Internet, our services are 100% free for volunteers and organizations alike.
• We provide an avenue for any volunteers interested in health areas to find an appropriate volunteering opportunity that fits their requirements.
• We are demonstrating to the world that there is no shortage of health-related volunteers and workers or opportunities.
• Based on the research we conduct through our free online services, we ultimately hope to sponsor and foster all types of new volunteering opportunities in areas that we designate as healthcare shortage areas.
