If you’re a physician looking for a health care career that offers high standards of care and will allow you to contribute to a rewarding mission, look no further. The Indian Health Service (IHS) is an innovative, dynamic, nationwide organization of public health professionals working to meet the individual health care needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives.

An IHS health care professional career offers adventurous, enthusiastic and dedicated practitioners a chance to live and work within Native communities throughout the country, providing you with a unique opportunity to learn the heritage of the Tribe, discover the traditions that have been carried down for generations and gain cultural insight into the beliefs and values of this deserving and appreciative patient population.

Our physicians also practice patient-centered care working as part of an interdisciplinary team of clinicians. There is ample opportunity for physician care in a wide range of specialties, including anesthesiology; emergency medicine, epidemiology; family medicine; internal medicine; obstetrics/gynecology; ophthalmology; pediatrics; podiatry; psychiatry; radiology; and surgery, as well as specialized programs for women’s health, child health, diabetes, elder care and behavioral health.

IHS offers three distinct career paths: The federal civil service, direct Tribal/Urban Indian hire or as an officer of the US Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps. The civil service and Commissioned Corps each offer generous vacation, sick leave, insurance and retirement packages, as well as possibilities for sign-up bonuses. If you choose to work directly for a Tribe, your pay and benefits are comparable to federal employment, but are negotiated directly with the Tribe.

What’s more, you could be eligible to apply for the IHS Loan Repayment Program (LRP), which repays qualified health profession education loans—up to $20,000 per year—in exchange for an initial two-year service commitment at an eligible site within your health discipline.

And you can experience all of this while living and working in some of the most beautiful areas of the country, making an IHS career all the more rewarding.

Professionally fulfilling and personally enriching. Explore a world of opportunities at or contact Applicants must be US citizens, board eligible and board certified.

Latest Job Openings

The policy of the IHS is to provide absolute preference to qualified Indian applicants and employees who are suitable for federal employment in filling vacancies within the IHS. IHS is an equal opportunity employer.

Assessing and supporting the functions of the immune system, and providing solutions to increase a patient’s ability to prevent or shorten an illness, is a hallmark of the art of medicine reaching back from ancient times.

Knowledge of the immune system has grown tremendously over the past few decades, opening new paths for creating effective treatments and support protocols; and while many of the infectious diseases of the past have ceased to be major threats in Western societies, new stressors have been placed on the human immune system that require a robust and comprehensive strategy to maintain optimal health.
